Dirigo High School, nestled in the foothills of the River Valley in Western Maine, serves the communities of Canton, Carthage, Dixfield, and Peru and is part of Regional School Unit #56. The name Dirigo references the Maine state motto, which is Latin for “I lead.” The school is aptly named as it aims to lead the way, charting a course that is guided by two beacons: DHS holds a steadfast commitment to continual academic growth while promoting a safe and positive school culture.
Serving approximately 200 students from grades 9-12, Dirigo offers an academic program that is rigorous, relevant, and engaging, and, importantly, tailored to support all students. With an 11-to-1 faculty-to-student ratio, small class sizes allow individualized attention and differentiated instruction. Our 1-to-1 laptop program puts technology—and by extension, the world—into the hands of all of our students.
Staff and students at Dirigo High School recognize the qualities that make us all unique, and we offer a variety of programs that support individual interests and strengths. From Advanced Placement to world languages to our gifted and talented program, our faculty is positioned to prepare students for unlimited postsecondary education options. Our partnerships in the community create even more choices: at Region 9, School of Applied Technology, students get hands-on training in technical programs, and our Jobs for Maine Graduates program supports students’ postsecondary goals by creating community connections and helping them to overcome academic, financial, and social barriers to success. Our special education program is built on a stalwart commitment to honoring each student, and its team of professionals is driven and dedicated to providing whatever support is needed to advance personal and academic goals. Simply put, Dirigo High School is an inclusive school whose staff values its connections with students, families, and community members.
School culture at Dirigo is built on the courage and compassion shown through everyday acts of kindness. Athletics and extracurriculars provide opportunities to celebrate our achievements and to give back to our community. Faculty and staff are staunchly committed to students and their own professional growth. Families are seen as frontline educators, and their input is sought and valued. All community members—from neighbors to business leaders—contribute to the school’s vision, to be a nationally recognized, innovative learning district where students, staff, families, community members, and supporters are excited to work, learn, and grow together.
